  9. This mask has finely carved facial features with stark color contrasts of black and white. Its serene face seems to see into another world.

Little is known about masks like this, but they may have been used during important ceremonies, or for purposes of divination or healing. They may represent the spirits of the dead. This mask was probably worn by a Yombe man in a ceremonial dance performed to connect the living with the spirits of their ancestors.
